Abstract

This is a study of lyrics sung by women in the period between the 1970 and br 2014. Systemic Functional Linguistics is the method adopted for analyzing the br lyrics. br The objectives of the study are to show that women have changed the way they br think and speak of themselves adopting a language that shows they have the upper br hand in making their decisions; social change over years is marked with change in br language use in texts and contexts; and that women highly estimate themselves as br men’s superiors. br The main sources of data in this study are the lyrics sung by women in the br period between 1970 and 2014. br The lyrics are analyzed in terms of field, mode and tenor and a special attention is br paid to the choice of meanings and the use of lexical items in the lyrics. br The results of data analysis show that the functions of the lyrics in the period br between 1970 and 2014 reveal that the lyrics sung by women maintain harsh and br aggressive tones towards men. This is made clear in their choices of lexical items br and in the recurrent use of imperative clauses. The study shows that women were br affected by the social circumstances in that period. Second wave feminism br influenced the social culture at that time and this became clear in the way women br speak about themselves and the male others in society.
