Abstract

The aim of the study was to assess patients’ perception and experience regarding electroconvulsive therapy. Research design descriptive research design was used to achieve the aim of this study. Setting this study was conducted at outpatient of El Abassia Governmental Hospital for psychiatric Mental Health. The sample convenient sample of 98 of psychiatric patients who received more than three electroconvulsive sessions .Tools of data collection data were collected using a structured questionnaire that include 1- General characteristics of the patients.
2- Patients’ perception about electroconvulsive therapy. 3- Patients’ experience about electroconvulsive therapy. Result most of the studied patients their age ranged between25-45years had good knowledge and positive experience regarding electroconvulsive therapy, there was statistically significant relationship between Patients’ knowledge regarding electroconvulsive therapy and socio demographic data of the patients and there was statistically significant relationship between Patients’ experience regarding electroconvulsive therapy and socio demographic data of the patients. Conclusion the present study revealed that the studied patients had good knowledge and positive experience toward electroconvulsive therapy. Recommendations health education program for the psychiatric nurse regarding nursing care before, during and after electroconvulsive therapy. Counseling unit in the hospital to raise the patients’ awareness regarding electroconvulsive therapy.
