Abstract This study aimed to assess the role of certain bio-chemical markers which are serum uric acid, albumin and β-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) an easily obtained blood tests to predict successful weaning in patients with chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease needing mechanical ventilation to improve overall outcome in COPD patients by reducing the duration of ICU stay and all over hospital stay in COPD patients, as well as to avoid re-intubation in COPD patients admitted to the ICU as possible. The study was conducted on 50 known chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease patients either chronic Bronchitis and/ or Emphysema attending Suez Canal University Hospital Emergency Unit that they are needing mechanical ventilation, divided into 2 groups: group I: a group of COPD patients admitted to the ICU needing mechanical ventilation encounter successful weaning. group II: a group of COPD patients admitted to the ICU needing mechanical ventilation encounter weaning failure. |
