Abstract

Vitiligo is an acquired disorder of the skin and mucous membranes that is characterized by well circumscribed, depigmented macules and patches and that occurs secondary to selective destruction of melanocytes.
Vitiligo is a psychologically devastating disorder. The fact that it typically occurs in exposed areas (the face and hands) has a major impact on self-esteem and perception of self.
Appearance of skin can condition an individual’s self-image, and any pathological alteration can have psychological consequences. Vitiligo is an important skin disease having major impact on the quality of patients’ life. Many vitiligo patients feel distressed and stigmatized by their condition, and in some cultures it results in affected individuals being ostracized.
The study aimed to determine estrogen receptor (ESR1) gene polymorphism in vitiligo female patients for understanding the pathogenesis of the disease.
