Abstract

Postoperative care is very important phase for patient, as it can prevent or reduce the occurrence of the complications. Aim: Assess factors affecting postoperative nursing performance in the surgical units. Research design: A descriptive exploratory design. Setting: surgical units at Benha university hospitals. Subject: A convenient sample of 75 nurses was worked at the previously mentioned setting. Tools of the study: self-administered questionnaire to assess knowledge of nurses and also assess factors affecting their performance in the surgical units and an observational checklist to assess nurses’ practice. Result: 1) 89.3% of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of knowledge, also 73.3% reported that the environmental, job related factors including organizational, psychological, personal and factors related to the patient had an effective effect on their performance. 2) 60.0% of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory level of practice, There were highly statistical significant relation between studied nurses’ Knowledge and their experience, also highly statistical significant relation between factors affecting nursing performance and their age, while there was statistically significant relation between studied nurses’ knowledge, their job and their education, statistically significant relation between studied nurses’ practice, their job, their experience and the courses which were taken,, also there was statistically significant relation between factors affecting nursing performance and their marital status and their experience, statistically significant relation between studied nurses’ knowledge and studied nurses’ practice, statistical significant relation between studied nurses’ knowledge and factors affecting postoperative nursing performance in the surgical units, statistical significant relation between studied nurses’ practice and factors affecting postoperative nursing performance in the surgical units and a significant correlation between studied nurses’ knowledge and a studied nurses’ practice. Conclusion: It was concluded that the nurses under study had unsatisfactory level of knowledge and practice regarding care of patients at surgical units as well as environmental, organizational, psychological, personal and job related factors which had a negative effect on their performance. Recommendations: The study recommended the importance of implementing an educational training program to improve nurses’ performance regarding management of patient after surgery.
