Abstract

The current thesis deals with an experimental scientific study to evaluate the efficiency of the nanomaterials consolidants used for limestone consolidation, then choosing the best consolidant to apply in the applied study on some of deteriorated parts of limestone blocks in Amenemhat II temple (case study) at El-ashmunein archaeological area, Minia, Egypt. Also, in the present work, antimicrobial surfaces were prepared using suspensions of Ca(OH)2 particles, mixed with TiO2 nanoparticles used as an antifungal coating for protection of limestone monuments. The antimicrobial surfaces were evaluated for their antifungal activity under natural condition, using Penicillium oxalicum and Aspergillus niger.
Some tests were performed for studying the behavior ‎of the ‎consolidants used. The main goal of these tests was to estimate the consolidants efficiency and ‎‎investigate the changes of physico-mechanical properties of the studied ‎samples before and after ‎treatment, and after artificial aging. For ‎realizing this target, laboratories measurements such as ‎weight change, ‎chromatic variations, physico-mechanical and SEM were performed. It was observed ‎that there are ‎noticeable differences among stone physico-mechanical properties of samples after treatment and after artificial aging according to the ‎types of ‎consolidant.
Here, a traditional consolidant and nanomaterials consolidants were used for the consolidation process‎ of the experimental samples. The traditional consolidant is Paraloid B-72; and the nanomaterials consolidants are Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles and SiO2 nanoparticles‎ dispersion in alcohol (ethanol or iso-propanol). Also, mixtures of the nanomaterials consolidants with the traditional consolidant (Paraloid B-72) were used in the consolidation process‎. The obtained results from the experimental study showed that the most efficient consolidants in the current study that are consisting of Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles‎ (nanolime) dispersion in alcohol and the consolidants that are mixtures containing dispersion Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles,‎ where they showed good results in the limestone consolidation process.
As for the suspension mixture consisting of TiO2 nanoparticles mixed with Ca(OH)2 particles [20 g of TiO2 nanoparticles to 200 mL of 0.27 M Ca(OH)2 in ethanol], which is used for protection of limestone monuments as an antifungal coating, it showed good antifungal properties against P. oxalicum and A. niger.
