Abstract

This research deals with the different types of water desalination technologies, their usage and their advantages and disadvantages. There are two major methods: thermal method and membrane method. Thermal method depends on heat and pressure which are applied to the inlet water to boil it and produced vapor and condensed into demi water. Membrane methods consist of two types, the first type depends on electric current to attract salts through a membrane. The other method depends on the high pressure to push the water through the membranes. Then concerned with the principle of RO was mentioned briefly showing how reverse osmosis works, how to use it in practice and its construction and types. The steps of RO desalination were discussed showing water pre-treatment, which includes multimedia filtration, cartridge filtration and chemical addition, and RO treatment, which includes RO general equations and the different systems of RO arrangements . It especially concentrates on the desalination technique using reverse osmosis (RO) method with El-Remela-Matrouh seawater desalination plant as an application. There are four RO desalination modules, each one has 6000 m3 per hr. it describes the components of the system by giving a practical application, Matrouh RO desalination plant was discussed briefly showing its general specification, pre-treatment (intake system, filtration, pumps and chemicals), reverse osmosis treatment (membranes design, pressure vessel, high pressure pump), also the control system was highlighted to show the monitoring control system, control instruments and control valves. As a final step of the RO system, the post-treatment was illustrated to show how to make water ready to be used.
