Abstract

The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of head nurses’ leadership style on their nurses’ turnover intention at Minia General Hospital.
The main findings of the study were:
• There were three quarter of staff nurses indicate that the dominantly style used by head nurses was autocratic leadership style; and less than one quarter from head nurses use laisse-fair leadership style and finally only (4.7%) of them use participative leadership style.
• The highest mean score among head nurses’ leadership styles was related to autocratic leadership and the lowest mean score was for participative style.
• There were three quarter of staff nurses had intention to leave the hospital.
• The dominant style used by head nurses at all hospital work areas was autocratic leadership style with a high percentage; except in two area, which the dominant leadership style in dialysis area was laissez-fair style, and in medical area the dominant leadership style was in between autocratic style and laissez-fair style.
• There were no a statistically significant differences between the leadership styles, turnover intention and staff nurses age or gender
• There were highly statistically significant differences between the leadership styles and their areas of work, as well as there were highly statistically significant differences between turnover intention and their areas of work.
• There was a positive correlation between autocratic leadership style and turnover intention. While there were negative correlation between participative style and laissez-fair style with turnover intention.
