Abstract

In the world of technology where the internet is the dominant means of interaction, the social network sites are the most popular means of communication. Facebook is the most common social network site, which is highly influential, quick, and convenient. Certainly, the permanent use of facebook; especially among adults, has a great impact on language practice and resulted in the emergence of a new language. This impact may be negative or positive and the new generation of language has its own distinctive characteristics and functions. This is the focus of this study which examines the linguistic features of the English used on Facebook on basis of orthography, grammar, logotypes, and lexicon. Additionally, this study tackles the effect of Facebook on the English language practice. The results of this study indicate that the new form of English language found on Facebook discourse is convenient to the framework of Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). It is considered a new variety of the English language which has its own properties and is mainly different from the Standard English. CMC facilities interaction between the user of facebook and provides many possibilities to practice language easily in a free environment without restrictions and out of classroom. Furthermore, the findings show that the majority of features are used for saving time and effort. In contrast, some other features are employed for simulating the spoken language. In addition, some other features are used for more than one reason.
