Abstract

The alveolar ridge is the main mandibular denture foundation area upon which a removable complete or partial denture is constructed with or without dental implants. Residual ridge resorption etiology and pathogenesis has been extensively studied in the literature. Recently, attention has been driven to the genetic predisposition of RRR.
Saliva provided an easy non-invasive source of DNA in the dental clinic to study if there is a correlation between SNP 1772C>T in HIF-1α gene (that is activated by hypoxia and triggers VEGF to enhance angiogenesis) and the presence of a severe unexplained form of RRR. PCR-RFLP was the method used to analyze genotype and allele frequencies -using HphI enzyme- in a sample of 50 healthy individuals. They were divided into case and control groups according to the least mandibular bone height as measured from panoramic radiographs, according to the ACP protocol.
Analysis of the genotypes showed that there is a significant difference in the distribution of the TT genotype between the case (28%) and control (4%) groups. The distribution of the genotypes CC, CT and the distribution of alleles C, T between both groups didn’t show a statistically significant difference. This may suggest that individuals carrying the genotype TT of the studied SNP may have a tendency towards developing a severely resorbed residual ridge more than those carrying the genotype CC or CT.
