Abstract

A particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique has been used to analyze the flow characteristics behind a road vehicle with/without an air spoiler attached on the rear end and also to estimate its effect on the wake. A vehicle model scaled in the ratio of 1/18 is set up in the mid-section of a closed-loop wind tunnel. The Reynolds number based on the vehicle length is taken in the range of 16.37x103 up to 3.77x105.To investigate the two-dimensional structure of the vortices zone,measurements are carried out on the planes parallel to the free stream. The results show significantly different vorticity distributions in the recirculation region according to the existence of the air spoiler. The wing tip vortices generate the down force and as a result, they might make the vehicle more stable in driving.The results show that, the turbulence intensity increases as the car speed
increases. One found that, the center of vortices is far from the car end when
the spoiler is used, in addition to, as the height of spoiler increases the center of vortices is far away from the car rear end
