Abstract

Teaching is a profession which is only done by
passion. Therefore, most of the time teachers use various
teaching methods and techniques with spending time and
effort to obtain a complete learning process and to reach to
the expected outcomes. While preparing the methods to be
used to reach the students, it is necessary for teachers to
prepare themselves effectively (Uskov, Howlett & Jain
2016).
This study was aimed to assess the preferred teaching
methods as perceived by nursing students and nursing staff
members and comparing between the perceptions of the
two subject groups.
Research methodology:
Research design
A descriptive comparative cross-sectional design was
used to carry out this study.
Study setting
This study was carried out at faculty of nursing Ain
Shams university include six different educational
departments.Study subjects
The subjects of this study included two groups,
namely nursing students and nursing teaching staff
members group. The first group was One hundred and
threatens (113) nursing teaching staff members working at
the previously mentioned educational departments.
The second group was two hundred sixty three (263)
nursing students out of (862) from the four academic years
nursing students were included in the study sample
distributed.
Tools of data collection:
Two tools were used for data collection of this study.
1- Questionnaire sheet for nursing students: This
tool aimed at assessing the preferred teaching methods as
perceived by nursing students. This tool is developed by
researcher guided by (Baraham, 2002) & (Al-Maghraby
& Al-Shamy 2013). It consisted of three parts.
Part 1: This part intended to collect data related to the
socio-demographic characteristics of the nursing
students: as age, sex and academic year …etc.
Part 2: This part was aimed at assessing teaching
methods preferences as perceived by nursing students. It was including total (19 items) consisted of three
dimensions.
Part 3: This part was aimed at assessing the benefits of
the preferred teaching methods for nursing students
contains (26 items)
2- Questionnaire sheet for nursing teaching staff
members: This tool aimed at assessing the teaching
methods preference as perceived by nursing teaching staff
members. This tool is developed by researcher guided by
(Al-Maghraby & Al-Shamy 2013). It consisted of three
parts.
Part 1: This part intended to collect data related to
socio-demographic data characteristics of the nursing
teaching staff members as name, age, specialty,
academic position and years of experience.
Part 2: This part was aimed at assessing teaching
methods preferences as perceived by nursing teaching
staff members. It included total (19 items) consisted of
three dimensions.
Part 3: This part was aimed at assessing the benefits of
the preferred teaching methods for nursing teaching staff
members it contains (15 items).Study results
The main study findings revealed the following: the
mean score perspectives of nursing teaching staff members
regarding teaching methods preferences related to
classroom the most frequently reported mean was that class
discussion. Conversely, the lowest reported mean was that
lecture. In addition to the mean score perspectives of
nursing teaching staff members regarding teaching methods
preferences related to clinical setting. As evident from the
table the most frequently reported mean was that
demonstration. On the other hand, the lowest reported mean
was that problem- based learning. there is a highly
statistically significant relation between perspectives of the
nursing teaching staff members and nursing students as
regard teaching methods related to classroom, teaching
methods related to clinical setting & teaching methods
related to skill lab (P<0.01).
