Abstract

The present study implements a mixture of expressionism and feminism with an eye on a thematic analysis of Wendy Wasserstein’s dramas to portray the heroines in a way that depicts their own feministic philosophy.
In the wake of the twentieth century thought and ideology which radically changed the attitude towards literature, realism began to fade away. Drama became a rich field for experimentation ranging from expressionism to absurdism. On the other side of the Atlantic, Expressionism was founded in German in 1910. Expressionism reached its peak at the hands of Eugene O’Neil, Ernst Toller, George Kaiser.
It is noteworthy that the most fundamental and mutual characteristic feature between realism and expressionism is observation. Since realism is distinguished by its connection with cause-and-effect, it gives birth to Expressionism to internally photograph man’s inner soul while realism tends to externally photograph man’s actions and incidents. Moreover, realism obviously depends on objectivity through tackling the society’s problems while Expressionism remarkably depends on subjectivity in viewing the state of the individual. So, it becomes clear that out of fragmentation and isolation of that postmodernism results in the rise of feminism that has emerged in order as an opportunity to raise women issues in a society dominated by the masculine forces but with no tendency of social reform. Yet, there appears in the horizon of contemporary American drama a new bright leading feminist playwright who tends to declare women’s liberation as being the predominant theme of her writing. This leading American playwright is Wendy Wasserstein.
