Abstract

Back ground: Job satisfaction is the pleasurable state that results from the positive evaluation of nurse’s performance. Nurses who show high levels of job satisfaction are more likely to be psychologically engaged to their work and have less absence rates. The study aimed to assess nurses’ job satisfaction and work engagement levels and their relation to absence rates. Design: A descriptive correlational design was utilized. Setting: The study was conducted at critical care units at Benha University Hospital. Subjects: All staff nurses at critical care units consisted of 447 nurses. Three tools were used for data collection: Job Satisfaction Levels Questionnaire, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale and Nurses’ Absence Record Form. Results: The minority of staff nurses had high job satisfaction level, Nearly half of staff nurses had low job satisfaction level, More than one third of staff nurses had moderate job satisfaction level, The minority of staff nurses had high work engagement level, nearly one third of staff nurses had moderate work engagement level, More than two third of staff nurses had low work engagement level, annual vacations were the highest vacations among staff nurses. While, unpaid unexcused were the lowest. And there was significant correlation between total absence rates and staff nurses’ job satisfaction levels and work engagement levels. Conclusion: There was low job satisfaction level and low work engagement level among staff nurses at critical care units. There was highly statistical significant relation between staff nurses’ job satisfaction and work engagement and their age, sex, marital status, educational qualifications and years of experience. In term of absence annual vacations were the highest vacations among staff nurses. While, unpaid unexcused were the lowest. Additionally, there was significant correlation between staff nurses’ job satisfaction and work engagement and their total absence rates at Benha University Hospital. The study recommended that hospital administration can provide effective open communication between staff nurses and managers through monthly meetings, conferences to pose their problems, opinions and their needs and maintain in- service training and education programs for increasing skills of staff nurses.
