Abstract Background: Most studies on gastroenteritis have focused on viral and bacterial infections, while gastroenteritis where intestinal protozoan parasites may have played a role has not been well studied. Objectives: determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites among gastroenteritis patients. Subjects and Methods: we included 100 patients with gastroenteritis presented in pediatric hospital (Ain Shams University). we excluded patients with immunodeficiency, chronic GIT illness, other concomitant diseases. Results: The results of microscopic examination of wet smears before and after concentration revealed that the overall prevalence of parasitic infection among the patients was 29%, where: 5 (17.2%) had Giardia duodenalis, 9 (31%) had Blastocystis hominis, 10 (34.5%) had Microsporidia, 4 (13.8%) had Cryptosporidium, and 1(3.4%) had Cyclospora. Conclusion: protozoal infections among gastroenteritis children are underestimated, this study showed prevalence 29% of protozoal infections among 100 cases of gastroenteritis among children. |
