Abstract Back ground: Caring for children with autism has been affected on parent’s health outcome and cause high stress levels, burden and health disturbance on family caregiver. Aim of the study: This study aimed to explore stress, burden and the relationship between stress and burden among parents of children with autism through: Assess parent stress of children with autism, assess burden facing parents of children with autism and assess the relationship between stress and burden. Research design: A descriptive research design was utilized. Setting: The study was conducted at outpatient child psychiatry clinic, Abbasia Psychiatric Mental Health Hospital. Study subjects: Purposive sample of (100) from parents of children with autism included in the study. Data collection tools: Data were obtained through three tools; I: socio-demographic data about parent, socio-demographic data about child, II: Parenting Stress Index and III: Burden interview questionnaire. Results: Majority of the studied sample were mothers. More than two third of children are males and between age 6:9 years old. More than half of the studied parents have high level of stress, and more than half of them suffered from severe level of burden. There were highly statistically significant relation between burden and stress among parents of children with autism. Conclusion: Parents of children with autism have severe level of stress and severe level of burden, and suffering from different aspects of burden. Recommendations: Providing program to reduce parent burden and dealing with stress associated with caring of these children. |
