Abstract

Summary
Water pollution is the problem faced by most countries. The aim of this study is to determine the environmental status of Lake Qarun and to monitor the effect of agricultural and domestic drainage on the concentration of pollutants by monitoring some variables that determine water quality.
The thesis consists of four chapters:
• Chapter 1: Introduction and Objectives of the Study: In this chapter, the importance of water and sources of contaminants was discussed in general, with a focus on the physical, chemical, bacteriological and heavy metals variables, as well as the objectives of the research.
• Chapter 2: Literature Review: In this chapter have been addressed previous studies that were exposed to Lake Qarun These studies are listed both on the level of lift stations or drainages that flow into Lake Qarun or the lake itself.
• Chapter 3: Materials and Methods: In this chapter, the chemicals, tools and methods of analysis of different samples were examined and the various variables were measured. The standard methods used to measure pH, temperature, total soluble salts, chemical oxygen requirement, biochemistry, heavy metals and total colon and fecal coliform were also listed.
• Chapter 4: Results and Discussion: In this chapter, all the results reached were reviewed. The results of this study were summarized as follows:
The lake suffers from increasing concentrations of some elements from internationally tolerable limits, e.g. heavy metals such as cadmium 0.0034 mg/L, zinc 1,091 mg/L at the mouth of Al- Bats drainage and ammonia 0.58 mg/L, phosphates 1,38 mg/L, chemical oxygen demand 292 mg/L and biogeochemical requirement of 71 mg/L in the mouth of the El-Wady drainage. It is therefore necessary to develop an environmental policy to control this pollution.
The study also showed that the concentrations were negatively affected by the distance from the agricultural drainage sources in the study, which confirms that the pollution suffered by the lake is mainly due to the agricultural wastewater discharged by the lake without treatment.
The study recommends, Lake Qarun need to coordinate various efforts between the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Company of Drinking Water and Sewage to purify the agricultural drainage before entering Lake Qarun to save it from these serious environmental problems and continuous monitoring for these pollutants. At present, these problems can be overcome by the use of appropriate management, specialized scientific research and the strict implementation of the recommended solutions.
