Abstract

Egypt has a high reported prevalence rate of hepatitis C virus (HCV). The viral infection is a leading cause of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer. The primary concern of all hepatitis C patients undergoing the antivaral therapy by Pegylated Interferon and Ribavirin is their health related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study was to Determine the relationship between the applied educational program and the quality of life for patients with hepatitis C treated by Pegylated interferon and Ribavirin therapy. Methodology: A convenient total sample of 100 adult male and female patients were recruited from outpatient clinic at Mansoura International Hospital. They randomly assigned into two equal study and control groups, the patients in the study group were subjected to the educational program. Data were collected using four tools; Interview Hepatitis C patient’s schedule, Knowledge assessment questionnaire, Hepatitis C Quality of Life Questionnaire and Pegylated interferon and Ribavirin side effects. Results: The present study revealed that post program implementation, the total mean scores of knowledge was significantly higher in the study group than the control group. Moreover, The total mean scores of the health- related quality of life was significantly improved in the study group than the control group. Furthermore, the patients in the study group had lower side effects than control group post program implementation. Conclusion: the applied educational program had proved a positive effects on improving patient’s knowledge, health related quality of life and management of side effects of the therapy. Recommendations: Comprehensive educational programs should be implemented from the first day of the treatment, to improve patients’ knowledge and to increase their awareness regarding appropriate health practices that restore their health and well being, prevent future side effects and improve their quality of life.
