The nature and the questions arising from the phenomena in study require
dividing the research into preface, four chapters and a conclusion.
In the preface: I identify the concept of “place “by defining it in many semantic
fields, among which are: linguistics, philosophy and arts. I tried to precisely
delineate the concept. Then I turned to the findings of the Arabic and Western
theories dealing with place in literature.
In the research chapters, I tried to analyse the different dimensions of place in
literature:
The first chapter deals with classifications and forms of place in novel. It is
divided in two main sections, which are open place and closed place. Both of
them comprise many of the places appears in abundance of the mentioned
novels.
Chapter two tackles the nature of the relation of place with other elements like:
language, time an4 character. I tried to highlight how place in literature
contributes to the structure of literature discourse and how it is no longer a
framing to events and characters.
Chapter three handles the place dimensions that novelists should heed. The
mulidimensionalism of place is what gives the spatial block an essence in
existence and specifies the criteria of accepting or rejecting the place, and
developing a feeling about it.
Chapter four deals with artistic techniques which make place an effective
element in the literary text. These techniques, their presentation and depiction
methods differ in the literary work, according to the relation among main
elements of literary structure. Description, cinematography and narrator
constitute the most important techniques of depicting, featuring and determining
the dimensions of the place.
Finally the conclusion of the research contains a group of results I reached. I
followed this with a comprehensive citation of the sources and references I used
to collect the data of the research.
