Abstract

In social interaction, people in almost all cultures seem to have certain notions or unpleasant topics that they avoid talking about directly. As long as there are things that are forbidden to be mentioned, euphemism serves to replace these unmentionables. Euphemism is an indispensible communication tool in every community since it facilitates social interaction,
It is the purpose in this study to draw attention to the Qur’anic metaphorically-based euphemistic expressions used to designate the taboos of sex, death, bodily functions, and divorce in the frame of the well-known Conceptual Metaphor Theory initiated by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). from this standpoint, the researcher proposes that conceptualization plays a crucial role in both the use and interpretation of sexual, death-related, excretory, and divorce-related metaphorical euphemisms. It follows from this proposition that the researcher incorporates Mandelblit’s (1995) Cognitive Translation Mandelblit’s Hypothesis for the analysis of the selected corpus. i.e. Similar ns f cognitive mapping conditioproposed two schemes oMapping Condition (SMC) and Different Mapping Condition . (DMC)
A comparison is to be help among the translations of fourteen metaphorical-based euphemistic expressions taken from the following three translations: The Meaning of the Holy Qur’an: New Edition with Revised Translation and Commentary by Abdullah Yusuf Ali (1993), The Noble Qur’an: English Translation of the Meanings and Commentary by Muhammad Al-Hilali and Muhammad Khan (1996), and The Meaning of the Glorious Qur’an by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall (2004)
