Abstract Background: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is a common preventable and treatable disease, is characterized by airflow limitation that is usually progressive and associated with an enhanced chronic inflammatory response in the airways and the lung to noxious particles or gases. Aim of the study was to determine the effect of inspiratory muscle training program in improving respiratory function of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Design a quasi-experimental research design was used. Setting: The study conducted at the Mansoura University Hospital. A sample size of 60 subjects divided in 30 for study group(who receive Inspiratory Muscle Training (IMT) program + routine hospital care) and 30 for control group (who receive routine hospital care only). Tools: Interview schedule sheet which consists of two parts; the first part is Socio-demographic and health profile and the second part is Knowledge about COPD and its treatment. Diagnostic tests for assessment of COPD patient which consists of laboratory investigations (ABG and CBC) and pulmonary function test. Clinical COPD Questionnaire (CCQ). Modified Borg Scale for Perceived Dyspnea. Observational Checklists. Results: there was highly statistically significant improvement in the study group after the training program regarding total score of knowledge, ABG, FEV1, FVC, FEV1/FVC, QOL and dyspnea (p<0.05) except PH(a significant improvement only p=0.034). Conclusion: inspiratory muscle training program enhances pulmonary function and improves arterial blood gases, quality of life and dyspnea. |
