Abstract

JIA is the most common rheumatic disease in childhood characterized by inflammatory arthritis lasting more than 6 weeks before the 16th birthday. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between serum calprotectin level and MSUS findings in patients with JIA This study was carried out on 60 JIA patients. Cases were recruited from the outpatient clinic of rheumatology and rehabilitation clinic at MUCH during their routine visits. Serum calprotectin was significantly correlated to different clinical and disease assessment parameters. Calprotectin was higher in children with active disease as compared to children with inactive disease except ERA subtype. Only, SJIA patients had a statistical significant difference between active and inactive patients (p=0.008). Scores done by US for synovial effusion, hypertrophy, positive PD signals and total US severity were all significantly correlated to different clinical parameters and disease assessment indices Serum calprotectin level was higher in active JIA patients and a strong positive correlation was found between S100A8/A9 and disease activity parameters. So, it can be used as additional specific indicator of JIA activity. MSUS is a fundamental tool for comprehensive JIA patients’ assessment with high sensitivity and accuracy over serum calprotectin.
