Abstract
H
eart Failure is a chronic disease that has a wide reaching effects on both mortality & morbidity of affected individuals despite advances in treatment. HF causes a major disability & functional limitations of physical activity in the patients. This limitation is closely related to the daily life activities which affects quality of life (QOL) and causes changes in the lifestyle imposed by the disease. Patients with HF have their lives affected by the disease and optimized care should be directed at aiming at decreasing these impacts on their quality of life.
In this study the aim is to assess the effect of iron deficiency on quality of life in CHF patients.
100 patients with documented history of chronic heart failure (EF < 40 % by echo) for more than 6 months were involved in the study. All patients were subjected to physical examination history taking regarding age, gender and risk profile including smoking, hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus and history of chronic kidney disease. A comprehensive echocardiographic examination was done according to the American Society of Echocardiography Guidelines on all patients in using a S5N Ver. 10.3.0 b.114 machine with an RS3 probe. Measurement of iron status was done for the patients using serum ferritin. Assessment of HRQoL was done using MLHFQ which determines mainly patients’ perception of their cardiac disability and the way it affects and impairs their QOL which includes mainly two main domains: physical & emotional domains.
