Abstract

This study aims at investigating the functions and attitudes of code switching between English and Egyptian Arabic by Egyptian teachers and learners in Egyptian EFL university lectures. To achieve the goals of the study, the researcher uses two tools in collecting data, namely recording and questionnaire. The researcher records some lectures at the English Department, Faculty of Education, Damanhur University in order to investigate the functions of code switching in the classroom context by analyzing the incidents of Code Switching that occurred in these recorded lectures. Furthermore, in order to provide a comprehensive analysis, the researcher conducts two questionnaires on teachers and learners in the same department. Both questionnaires of teachers and learners are divided into two parts. The first ten items of the questionnaire are on the functions of teachers’ Code Switching in classroom context to provide a comparison between the views of teachers and learners regarding the functions of Code Switching in classroom context. In addition, the two questionnaires include eight items investigating attitudes of both teachers and learners. Results of the study reveal that both teachers and learners switch codes in classrooms. The functions of Code Switching used by teachers differ from the functions used by learners. The study also reveals that teachers have a negative attitude towards Code Switching, while learners have a positive attitude towards it, despite knowing that using the English language only is more beneficial to them.
