Abstract Background: Bronchoscopy is a procedure to visualize the tracheobronchial tree the flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy FOB, has greatly enhanced the diagnosis and understanding of lung diseases, and has evolved into the most commonly used diagnostic procedure in pulmonary medicine. Objective: To study the indications and outcomes of flexible fiber-optic bronchoscope in bronchoscopy unit, in Embaba Chest Hospital (ECH) in the period from January 2016 until April 2017. Patients and Methods: Our study included 160 patients who underwent flexible fiber-optic bronchoscopy were included in this study. All the patients were subjected to (full history taking, general and local clinical examination and radiological work up either CXR or CT scans). Results: We also found that: all the patients (100%) underwent BAL; while only (36.9 %) underwent biopsy procedure. Regarding complications, we found that; the over-whelming majority of patients (98.1%) had no complications at all during bronchoscopy; while only (1.9% and 0.6%) had bleeding and hypoxia respectively. Conclusion: The diagnostic yield of FOB with routine and basic procedures like endobronchial biopsy and bronchial lavage fluid analysis is satisfactory in this study. Routine flexible bronchoscopy technique continues to have a high diagnostic yield in current clinical practice in common lung conditions like lung cancer and pulmonary infection. We believe that the procedure is more useful in diagnosis when combined with a sound clinical judgment and appropriate supportive investigations. |
