Abstract

The internet was defined as the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide. It is a group of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies.(1)
Internet addiction is generally defined as “an uncontrollable desire for excessive use of the internet, devaluation of time spent without connecting to the internet, intense nervousness and aggression in the case of deprivation and progressive deterioration of social and family life. (97)
This study was carried out the aim of studying the pattern and determinants of internet use among Technical Health Institute students in Alexandria in the academic year (2015/2016) where a cross-sectional study design was conducted. All students of the institute were asked about their age, sex, grade and use of internet to estimate utilization rate of internet from the students who use internet 800 students were entered into the study. Students were selected using stratified random sample with proportional allocation.
In the light of data analysis the results could be summarized as follows:
• Higher percentage of severe degree of internet addiction was observed among male users (52.4%) than female users (47.6%).• In all levels of internet addiction access to the internet was through mobile phone (90.5%, 83.2% and 87.9% respectively) The beginning age of internet use among the three level, was 14- 17 years (66.7%, 53.8% and 51.8% respectively) • In relation to the severe degree of internet addiction, students who spent 12 or more hours / day were 38.1%. The social media was the favorite sites among the three level of internet addiction (95.2%, 86.5% and 81.5% respectively) • The majority (85.7%) of severe degree of internet addicts had irregular bed time or sleep disturbance (90.5%) • The study revealed that the severe degree of internet addiction is associated with joint pain (61.9%) while, moderate and low degree of internet addiction had no effect on joints (56.6%, 76.9%) and that was statistically highly significant.• Multivariable logistic regression analysis was carried out to uncover the variables with potential effect on internet addiction. Four variables were detected to be statistically significant which were; Mother education (University), Beginning age of internet use, No. of hours using the internet/day, Viewing sex pages (+18), The constructed model was statistically significant Based on the result of the present study and in view of the previous conclusion, the following recommendations are suggested:• Encourage all students to use internet network to improve their life• It is also necessary to make the youth and their parents aware of the dangers of problematic internet use and pay attention to consequences connected with it.
• Counseling lectures to all students about how to use internet network within safety limit
• Future research may consider asking respondents about the location of their internet usage whether at home or relatives’ domiciles, internet cafés, or other places. This will help to determine where addicted students are spending the time they dedicate to internet usage and how that behavior can be controlled• Future research can study other communities such as school students, families and employees.
