Abstract

Ocular trauma is a worldwide, important cause of eye morbidity and is a leading cause of non-congenital monocular blindness in children. Beside the direct damage to the ocular structures resulting in loss of vision, an indirect cause of poor visual outcome is due to dense amblyopia resulting from prolonged periods of light and formed vision deprivation.
Ocular injury in childhood is of greater significance as, in addition to visual impairment, eye injury is known to cause significant morbidity, in terms of pain, psychosocial stress and economic burden. Disability, prolonged suffering, as well as problems with adjustment can also occur.
This is an observational non-interventional study of all children aged 18 years or younger presenting to the ophthalmology department in Alexandria Main University Hospital with any sort of ocular trauma between June 2018 to November 2018. The aim of this study was to analyze epidemiological factors, causes and suggest prevention plans for children presenting with ocular trauma.
The study was carried out on 152 eyes of 151 patients, every patient was subjected to data collection about: demographic characteristics, details of the injury, and full ocular examination.
In this study, ocular trauma occurred more commonly in males than in females, with male to female ratio (3:1). Right eyes were more involved than left eyes. There was an increase in rural over urban injuries, this may be related to less safe practices related to children in rural governorates.
Ocular traumas were almost equally distributed between household and external environment. Children of parents who have professional jobs were less liable to trauma than those whose parents have non-professional jobs.
Mechanical injuries were considered the main mode of trauma in this study with the predominance of blunt trauma.
Corneal injuries were the most common type of injury in this study, as children are less careful on dealing with hazardous activities than adults. Open globe injuries were more common than closed globe injuries.
Eye lid injuries were second in frequency after corneal injuries in this study, followed by conjunctival injuries and scleral injuries.
Orbital injuries need significant force of trauma so, they were rare in this study.
