Abstract

Orchiectomy is considered the gold standard treatment for testicular cancer, prostatic cancer, testicular torsion, male breast cancer and post-puberty undescended testis. It leads to testosterone deficiency, which also occurs gradually with age. Testosterone deficiency produces degenerative changes in androgen responsive tissues including the hippocampus.
Testosterone is used as a hormone replacement for hypogonadism. However, it is contraindicated in certain conditions and its long term therapy produces various side effects. Citrus peel extract has wide range of pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and antiallergic effects in addition to its ability to increase the serum level of testosterone. So, it can reduce the oxidative damage produced by testosterone depletion with fewer side effects.
The present study was performed to study the hippocampal neurodegeneration in experimentally induced orchiectomized albino rats, and to assess the role of ethanolic extract of citrus peel supplementation in comparison with testosterone replacement in orchiectomized adult albino rats.
