Abstract

1. Introduction and literature survey:
Family Zygophyllaceae comprises about 25 genera and 240 species of
flowering plants, among which Zygophyllum simplex L. plant. The literature
survey of genus Zygophyllum showed that it is rich in saponin and phenolic
compound with different biological activities.
2. Phytochemical screaning
The preliminary phytochemical screening of Zygophyllum simplex L. revealed
the presence of carbohydrates and/ or glycosides, saponins, triterpenes and/ or
sterols, flavonoids and tannins and absence of alkaloids and anthraquinones.
3. Investigation of Ultra performance liquid chromatography:
The ethyl acetate fraction of Zygophyllum simplex L. was revealed the
presence of different compounds as flavonoids and phenolic compounds.
4. Investigation of gas chromatography analysis:
Analysis of ethyl acetate and n-butanol fraction of Zygophyllum simplex L.
revealed presence of flavonoids and coumarins and its derivatives.
5. Identification and structure elucidation of the isolated compounds by
Spectral means:
Structure elucidation depends on analysis by NMR technique. Complete
assignments of the protons were achieved by the analysis of IH NMR and
carbon detected by 13C NMR. These studies led to isolation and identification of
5 Compounds from n-butanol fraction of Zygophyllum simplex L.
Isolated compounds from the Z. simplex L.:
Compound 1: 3-0-[p-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 ~2)-fJ-D-glucopyranosyl] quinovic
acid-28-0-fJ-D-glucopyranosyl ester
Compound 2: 3-Methoxy - Quinvoic acid
Compound 3: Quinvoic acid
Compound 4: 3-0- fJ-D-glucopyranoside - Quinvoic acid
Compound 5: Quercetin-3-0-a-L-rhamnoside
