Abstract The problem of the study was an attempt to investigate the effectiveness of a suggested hypermedia program for enhancing descriptive writing of first-year secondary school students who study English as a foreign language. Therefore, the researcher designed a hypermedia program and then applied it to the experimental group to investigate its effectiveness on developing descriptive writing competency with respect to applying conventions of descriptive writing and linguistic aspects of writing. After the experiment, the researcher administered a post- test equivalent to the writing pre-test to the experimental group. Then, the SPSS statistics program was used for analyzing the data obtained and identifying the differences between the pre and post test. Finally, the results were analyzed and interpreted. Results of the Study The results indicated that the hypermedia program proved to be an effective way to develop first year secondary school students’ descriptive writing. The implementation of the hypermedia program could also gain the students’ interest and motivation for involving themselves in the learning process of writing. Students who used the hypermedia program in writing descriptive texts became more confident with their writings and could produce good descriptive texts. In the light of the statistical analysis of this study, the following results were reached: 1. There was a statistically significant difference at level (0.01) between the writing test pre and post mean scores of the experimental group students on linguistic aspects in favor of the post - test. 2. There was a statistically significant difference at level (0.01) between the writing test pre and post mean scores of the experimental group students on grammar in favor of the post - test. 3. There was a statistically significant difference at level (0.01) between the writing test pre and post mean scores of the experimental group students on vocabulary in favor of the post - test. 4. There was a statistically significant difference at level (0.01) between the writing test pre and post mean scores of the experimental group students on expressions in favor of the post - test. 5. There was a statistically significant difference at level (0.01) between the writing test pre and post mean scores of the experimental group students on punctuation marks in favor of the post – test. 6. There was a statistically significant difference at level (0.01) between the writing test pre and post mean scores of the experimental group students on applying conventions of writing descriptive texts in favor of the post - test. 7. There was a statistically significant difference at level (0.01) between the writing test pre and post mean scores of the experimental group 92 Chapter Five students on overall skills of writing (linguistic and applying conventions ) descriptive texts in favor of the post – test. |
