Abstract

Summary and conclusion
This study was conducted to evaluate and compare the study is to study the effect of implant position on the masticatory efficiency of implant retained partial over denture in distal extension cases, by measuring masticatory efficiency using digital electromyography (EMG).
Twenty four patients exhibiting mandibular bilateral distal extension edentulous area (Kennedy class I) were selected to participate in this study. The selected patients were divided into three equal groups:-
• group (A):
For group A patients, a conventional removable partial denture was constructed restoring distal extension area.
• group (B):
For group B patients, an implant retained partial over denture restoring distal extension area was constructed with implant placed in first molar position.
• group (C):
For group C patients, an implant retained partial over denture restoring distal extension area was constructed with implant placed in second molar position.
Evaluation of the implants supporting structures was made after three months of insertion, partial denture was then constructed and Patients were left for 3 weeks after denture insertion to accommodate to the new denture then they were recalled for muscular activity evaluation. Electromyographic muscle activity of the masseter and temporalis muscles were assessed during chewing hard and soft food , by using a digital electromyogram (EMG).
Within the limitations of this study, based on the obtained results, this study showed that:
- Partial denture retained by two osseointegrated implants one on each side of the lower arch showed better effect on the masticatory efficiency compared by conventional partial dentures.
- Changing implant position from first mandibular molar to second mandibular molar had no significant effect on the electromyographic muscle activity.
