Abstract

There are more than 10 million deaf people in the Arab nations presently Egypt alone accounts for 4 million deaf people. Hence, an arabic sign language is necessary for facilitating ommunication between the hearingimpaired people and the larger society. However, everyone does not understand this language. Furthermore, the previous systems were designed for SLR, which were extremely expensive, and several sensors were required to nterpret all hand and finger motions. For these reasons, a new prototype of the smart glove is produced, which can be used as a part of an electronic system to translate the Arabic sign language into a spoken or written Arabic. This design includes all Arabic sign language (words level) by using 4-flex sensors, 4-contact pad sensor, gyroscope, accelerometer, controller, and Bluetooth Module per hand. The design is driven from a statistical analysis of the Arabic sign language – 1300 words in terms of single hand signs, double hand signs, single-stage signs, multi-stage signs, fingers angle, and orientation. This thesis explores the design analysis and implementation of this system. The result of the (53words) samples of Arabic SL signs (involving all classification) is 85% pass from the first time and 15% pass after many trials (double-hand multi-stage signs classification) due to the synchronisation problem of the two hands data. The system is low cost, requires low power, and has a fast response.
Chapter 1 introduces introduction about sign language, the classification of Sign language, important notes about Arabic sign language, the techniques of sign language recognition, also the most popular types of smart gloves, and finally literature review about sign language recogination. Chapter 2 illustrates arabis sign language statistics, movement of the hand parts based on anatomical shape, the new suggested design of smart gloves depending on the previos statistical, and finally the simulation of novel design of smart gloves. Chapter 3 shows the initialization of hardware and software of the embedded system, the design of algorthim of sent data packet from smart gloves to centeral unit, and finally the design of the windows application form and its calssifiactions
Chapter 4 shows the conclusion and the future work. Appendix I lists the complete Arabic sign language statistics table Appendix II shows the Arduino codes of of the embedded system Appendix III shows the VB.net codes of the windows application forms.
