Abstract

Our population is aging, and as hypertension affects most elderly people above the age of (60 years) these individuals are more likely to have organ damage or clinical cardiovascular disease (CVD), Increases in SBP occur with aging in most societies around the world. Across sectional study carried out on elderly attending at the out patient clinic in primary health care unit in El-Byroom village (Sharkia governorate) To estimate the prevalence of hypertension (defiend as blood pressure >140/ 90mmhg) , To identify some of risk factors of hypertension and to assess the level of awareness about hypertension and its complication among studied sample Results: In the current study it was found that the prevalence of hypertension in elderly was 46.8% among those 43.5 % males and 50.0% females, it was found that the prevalence of hypertension in elderly was statistically significant with aging, educational level, presence of previous family history of hypertension, diabetics, physical activity as (walk), knowledge and awareness about hypertension and increased body mass index. On the other hand there was statistically non-significant association between hypertension and occupation, history of kidney problem, marital status and smoking. A comprehensive strategy for reduction of mortality and morbidity associated with hypertension must include prevention strategies, health promotion, earlier detection, and adequate treatment, and finally Rehabilitation.
