Abstract Abstract: Urban centers were affected by contemporary trends and stakes of the various forces that drive the city to change in sequence and lead to growth and development. Specially, after the emerge of many movements that were related to improving the built environment such as: The New Urbanism, Smart Growth and the Compact City. Those movements involved the mixed usages as their primary principle in the construction, planning and real estate development sector. In return, the urban construction of Egypt inevitably was affected by the impact of new trends especially in new urban areas. Urbanization, improved quality of life, and diverse lifestyle choices have led to an increase in demand for contemporary urban centers, where people want to work, entertain and sometimes shopping . On the other hand, the concept of sustainability is increasingly affecting urban development and the construction sector. Since the Rio Summit in 1992, which emphasized the importance of achieving sustainable development at the local level, many local authorities and organizations around the world have developed frameworks to achieve sustainability goals. At the same time, demand for the development and innovation of sustainability assessment tools has increased; Indicators-based sustainability assessment tools are being essential tools for assessment. Whereas, many of those movements and trends that advocate mixed use, believed that such as this contemporary concept will lead to more sustainable lifestyles and they emphasize that urban centers will become more attractive, viable and safer places to live and work. Thus, it is important to look at the relationship between this contemporary trend and the sustainability, to reach more awareness and understanding . Consequently, the research aims to develop an assessment methodology that identifies initial indicators and proposes an assessment tool based on those indicators; followed by a questionnaire to determine the relative importance of indicators based on expert perceptions. Finally, a comprehensive framework / tool was developed with weighting indicators in the scope of the test and assessment of models for the contemporary urban center in Greater Cairo. The findings reveal visions and recommendations for policy makers and stakeholders. And advocating for further studies on sustainability assessment tools and methodologies and emphasizing the need for effective collective and practical efforts to support sustainability issues.
