Abstract

ABSTRACt
This thesis expresses a new facade trend ”Kinetic facade” which calls to consider the
building envelope as a balanced dynamic facade rather than the traditional static one which
had been known for thousands of years. This new trend calls to make use of the techniques of
the modern era and the enormous potential that accompanied it. Those techniques have
influenced the directions of some architects who became fascinated with it, and it turned their
way to face the various design problems through the use of electro-mechanical means.
The researcher discusses how to activate kinetic facades as an interactive tool responded to
the changing climatic conditions and building occupants’ needs. Therefore, design standards
and guidelines for kinetic facades will be set to satisfy the environmental, social, economic and
aesthetic aspects.
This thesis consists of an introduction and four Parts as follows:
Part 1 ”Kinetic Facades” is composed of an introduction and three chapters which discuss;
Kinetic facades as a term and product, and its history.
Part 2 ”Design Strategies of High-Performance Facades” is composed of introduction and
two chapters which discuss the High-Performance Facades Definition and Properties in addition
to its design process.
Part 3 ”Evaluation of Kinetic Fa~ades Applications” is composed of introduction and two
chapters which discuss the feasibility of using kinetic facades to satisfy the environmental,
social, economic and aesthetic requirements.
Part 4 ”A Methodology to set design standards and guidelines for Kinetic Facades in
Egypt” is composed of an introduction and two chapters; the first chapter objective is setting
design standards and guidelines for kinetic facades for specific Climatic Regions in Egypt, in
addition to detecting the potentials and limitations of designing Kinetic Facades for each of
them. The second chapter presents the economic evaluation of different Kinetic prototypes by
estimating its implementation costs, in Egypt.
Finally, Conclusions and General Recommendations are presented.
