Abstract

That is why the dissertation is divided into four chapters. The first chapter elaborates on the style of ”the author-as-character”, highlighting the recent interest in the literariness of autobiography, coming to a hybrid genre where fact and fiction co-exist. The second chapter demonstrates several texts of Roth’s fiction, explaining why they have consistently been read as autobiography. The third chapter is dedicated to Roth’s texts that are, mistakenly, identified by critics as clear-cut autobiographies, disregarding Roth’s style of deconstructing the boundaries between genres to escape being classified. The last chapter introduces Roth as a critic who, fed up with being misread, takes it upon himself to clarify how his books need to be read. The conclusion acts as the final word on the reason why Roth has extensively used and abused the ”author-as-character” style, reiterating what has been discussed throughout the previous chapters.
