Abstract

Summery Diarrheal diseases have been a major health problem throughout human history. Prior to the advent of modern medicine, severe diarrhea was often fatal and disease outbreaks spread quickly, affecting large populations. Today, despite the success of interventions such as oral and intravenous rehydration therapy, diarrheal diseases remain a substantial cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Racecadotril has been recognized as a potential adjunctive treatment for acute diarrhea due to its antisecretory properties so the effectiveness of racecadotril in reducing rotaviral diarrhea is warranted if the drug is to be used routinely in treatment protocols. The aim of this work was to study the effect of racecadotril supplementation on acute infantile diarrhea. This study was carried out on fifty infants with acute infantile diarrhea, aging less than 1 year from January 2018 to January 2019 . Patients were ( 29 males and 21 females ) from those admitted to Diarrhea and Nutrition Unit of Pediatric Department at Tanta University Hospital. Subjects were classified into two groups: group (1): Included 25 patients with acute diarrhea and received ORS and Racecadotril at dosage (1.5 mg /kg/8hours) for 5 days or until cure occurred.
