Abstract

Out of 90 soft contact lenses sample collected from lenses wearers, 49 samples were contaminated with 66 microorganisms. The most frequently isolates were Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus albus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella spp and Candida albican.
Five different types of multipurpose contact lens solutions (MPSs) commonly marketed in Egypt and manufactured by four different companies used to test the in-vitro anti-microbial activity on seven organisms of isolates, also we studied the effect of (MPSs) on inhibition and removing isolates biofilm formation.
Significant differences were observed among the five MPSs in terms of their antimicrobial effects on the seven isolated organisms (<0.001). (ReNu multi plus) and (All clean soft) showed the highest antimicrobial activity against most of the bacteria and fungi tested. All MPSs solutions showed good results for inhibition and removing biofilm formation best performances were obtained on Staphylococcal biofilms. (All clean soft) had the best inhibition effect against most biofilm formation but for removing the performed biofilm (ReNu multi plus) was the best. In general the effects of all MPSs to remove preformed bio film were better than their effects to prevent biofilm formation.
