Abstract

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common congenital defect and is the most common type of heart disease among children. The incidence of congenital heart disease is approximately 8 per 1000 live birth, with a higher rate in stillbirth, spontaneous abortion and prematurity.
The prevalence of CHD has been increasing due to the greater detection of minor defects by the Doppler echocardiography, which has been widely used. In addition, the advances in intensive and surgical care have allowed a greater survival and, consequently, a greater number of adults with this condition.
Congenital cardiac defects can be divided into two major groups based on presence or absence of cyanosis into cyanotic and acyanotic. These two groups could be further subdivided according to pulmonary blood flow either hyperemic, normal or oligimic.
The aim of the work was to describe the prevalence of congenital heart diseases among children attending cardiology clinic of Alexandria University Children’s Hospital.
In the current study, the target population was six hundred cases attending the cardiology outpatient clinic of Alexandria University Children Hospital in a random manner.
All cases files had been revised and categorized according to age, sex, type of lesion, residency, intervention and outcome.
The data were analyzed using SPSS program with the following results:
• Total number of the studied cases was 600 cases; (52.8%) of cases were males and 47.2% were females.
• Most of the studied cases age ranged from (2-5 years) with a percentage of 44% while patients with age (0-2 years) were the less frequent category (10.5%)
• Most of cases were diagnosed in the 1st year of life accounting about 79% (n=474 cases) and most of these cases about 44.5% (n=267 cases) were diagnosed by the first month of life.
• Most of the studied cases were from Alexandria (58.7%), Beheira (30%), Kafr el Sheikh (9.3%) and Matrouh (2%).
• About 85.3% of cases were found to be acyanotic while only 14.7% of cases were cyanotic.
• About 60.8% of cases were from urban areas and 39.2% were from rural areas.
• VSD was the most common type of CHD (37.2 %) followed by ASD (33.3%) of cases while Tetralogy of Fallot was found to be the most common cyanotic CHD (6.7%).
• It was found that most cases had a single lesion 70.7% while only 29.3% had combined lesions with about 21.3% of cases had two combined lesions.
