Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare between pharmacological intervention (NSAIDs, Ibuprofen) and non-pharmacological intervention (Acupressure) on pain experienced by patients undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy in the period of elastomeric separators insertion. A total of 75 patients enrolled for orthodontic treatment in the clinic of the Department of Orthodontics, Faculty of Dentistry at Mansoura University were recruited as study participants with age ranged between 12-25 years old, healthy gingival tissue and intact margins with no spacing or retained deciduous, and no history of asthma, peptic ulceration, or renal, hepatic, cardiac impairment or any other systemic diseases. All the participants were not using any analgesics in the time of the clinical trial, no previous orthodontic treatment, acupressure experiences, or pregnancy as acupressure induces early abortion. All the information needed for the patients were given to them in Arabic advice sheets. The consents were obtained from the patients/parents before their recruitment in the trial, in verbal and written way. Each group of the trial was contained approximately 25 patients for having a group ratio 1:1:1; drug 25, acupressure 25, and control 25. The first group was the control group, no pain relief intervention following separator placement. The second intervention group was NSAID group, the subjects were instructed to read and apply the instructions of the advice sheet, dictated the use of Ibuprofen 400 Mg up to 4 doses in the first 24 hours after the separators insertion for control the orthodontic pain (1 pill each 6 hours). The third intervention group was the acupressure group; the subjects got an advice sheet and dictated to practices of acupressure approach by Appling pressure on a definitive acupressure point on the back of the hand region to control orthodontic pain.
