Abstract

Valproate (VPA) which usually prescribed as its sodium salt was
approved for treatment of epilepsy either as monotherapy or in
combination with other anticonvulsant drugs. It is also used in the
treatment of a variety of neuropsychiatric illnesses as mania, bipolar
affective disorder, migraine, headache, prophylaxis and several anxiety
disorders as It elevates the whole brain gamma amino butyric acid
(GABA) a major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, and inhibits
GABA degradation (Ibrahim, 2012).
It was reported that it has sever toxic effects on liver tissue
(Pourahmad et al., 2012).In addition Valproate (VPA) medication is
associated with development of polycystic ovaries, menstrual disorders
and hormonal changes in women with epilepsy (Røste et al., 2001).
It was demonstrated that use of VPA in patients with epilepsy is
associated with an increase in body weight by increasing serum insulin
and insulin/glucose levels or by stimulating appetite (Kanemura et al.,
2012).
Metformin is one of the most widely used oral antidiabetic drugs
for the treatment of type 2 diabetes (Jiang et al., 2014) as it controls
blood glucose levels by increasing insulin sensitivity and improving
glucose uptake in the liver(Mori et al., 2017).
