Abstract

Deviated nasal septum is a common condition. Up to 90% of people have nasal septal deviations, but the majority of them are asymptomatic. Only symptomatic patients may require surgical correction of their septal deviation by septoplasty or submucosal resection. Septoplasty or submucosal resection is a common operation performed in otorhinolaryngology. This operation can be carried out alone or in combination with turbinate surgery.Hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates is the most frequent cause of chronic nasal obstruction. Although medical treatments are frequently effective to restore comfortable nasal breathing, sometimes nasal obstruction is slightly improved, in these cases; inferior turbinoplasty can be proposed.Chronic rhinosinusitis is among the most common health problem and its management includes medical as well as surgical treatment. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) has largely placed conventional surgical procedure in the last 25 years because of its high success rate, low incidence of complications, advancements in instrumentations and imaging.Nasal pack is known as primary treatment for moderately sever epistaxis since it was first documented by Hippocrates in fifth century BC. Packing of nasal cavity following surgery reduce the incidence of post-operative bleeding, decrease edema, provide internal support to bony and cartilaginous parts and increase septal flap apposition. However, it may expose the patient to complications such as patient discomfort, sinusitis or toxic shock syndrome that indicate prescribing prophylactic systemic antibiotic.
