Abstract

Background: Cesarean section is a common abdominal surgery showing an increasing trend over the last three decades. Recent statistics shows increase of C-section rates by 12.4% from 1990 to 2014. For example, in Egypt, according to latest data, more than half of all women (51.8%) give birth by C-section without much difference between rural and urban areas.
Objectives: The aim of the work is to determine which of the following; coffee or peppermint oil has a better stimulant effect on GIT motility after Cesarean section.
Patients and Methods: This study was a randomized clinical trial, this study was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital, study period was from March 2019 till September 2019, study population was 600 pregnant women are recruited from those who attend Ain Shams Maternity Hospital and scheduled for elective cesarean section.
Results: Furthermore it was shown that time to regain of GIT motility was statistically significantly shorter among peppermint research group than among coffee research group with 30 minutes difference in peppermint group.(p value < 0.001). Regain of GIT motility rate was statistically significantly higher among peppermint group than among coffee group (p value<0.001). the Time to first pass of flatuss was statistically significantly shorter among peppermint research group than among coffee research group with 30 minutes difference (p value<0.001).The time to first defecation was statistically significantly shorter among peppermint research group than among coffee research group with 60 minutes difference p value <0.001. Defecation rate was statistically significantly higher among peppermint research group than among coffee research group. (p value<0.001).
