Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder in which prevalence has been increasing steadily all over the world. Cerebrovascular complications make diabetic patients 2–6 times more susceptible to a stroke event and this risk is magnified in younger individuals and in patients with hypertension and complications in other vascular beds. In addition, when patients with diabetes and hyperglycemia experience an acute ischemic stroke they are more likely to die or be severely disabled and less likely to benefit from treatment. The aim of this study is to evaluate cerebral stroke in diabetic patients and the impact of diabetes mellitus on the severity and outcome of all types of stroke. This study included 500 patients with the first attack stroke who were recruited from Mansoura Emergency Hospital and internal medical department (specialized medical hospital) Mansoura University. The cases were classified into two groups; group A that included 404 diabetic patients and group B that included 96 non-diabetic patients. The cases were subjected to full history taking (including demographic data, history of the current disease and associated chronic disease) and full clinical examination (with concentration on neurological examination). Laboratory investigations were done including assessment of serum liver functions, kidney functions and bleeding profile. Neurologic disability was evaluated by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) within 24 hours after admission. Radiological investigations baseline and follow up CT brain.
