Abstract The incidence and prevalence of severe and chronic low back pain increase with older age. Aim: was to evaluate the effect of health education program on chronic low back pain among elderly. Subjects and methods: Quasi-experimental design was used, and the study was conducted at the outpatient clinic of the Rheumatology and Rehabilitation at Zagazig University Hospitals on a purposive sample consisted of 80 elderly. Tools: Tool I: Questionnaire sheet consisted of four parts; Demographic characteristics, Medical history, Assessment of body mass index, Assessment of knowledge regarding low back pain. Tool II: Observational chick list for assessment of elderly practices regarding low back pain. Tool III: Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire. Tool IV: The Visual Analogue Scale for pain assessment. Results: This study revealed presence of statistical significant positive coefficient correlation among post program knowledge & knowledge about practice & practices (P<0.001). The majority of the studied sample (91.3 %) reported sever disability before program, while after program, the degree of disability reduced to reach (22.5% moderate disability & 20.0% mild disability). Also, the results revealed that 56.2% of the studied sample reported sever pain and 41.2% of them reported moderate pain before program, while after program, the intensity of pain reduced to reach (62.5% mild pain & 16.2% no pain).conclusion: the implementation of the health education program led to improvement in knowledge and practices related to low back pain with less pain and disability. Recommendation: The study recommended applying more educational programs in the same setting for more positive effects and nurses should be included. |
