Abstract

Due to the increase of using elevators and other lifting machines; it became vital matter to study their parts and improve their performance. Wire ropes are considered as the most important part of the elevators so; studying their performance has become a great issue that got the attention of many researchers. In this research, a wire rope that used in elevators was studied using Finite Element Modeling (FEM). This model was drawn using SolidWorks program and analyzed using ANSYS program. Many experiments were conducted using steel wire to verify the (FEM) results. Two different fatigue testing machines were used in this work. One of them is Flex tester, the other Fatigue testing setup was designed and constructed in this work to run out fatigue tests on steel wire samples under conditions similar to the real conditions. The models of two types of fatigue tests were prepared using ANSYS program. The results of the experimental tests and the (FEM) were very close and have acceptable percentage of deviation. Tension test was done to obtain the mechanical properties of the actual steel wire used in the previous experiments. These mechanical properties have been used in both models of (FE). The results revealed that (FEM) using ANSYS can be used to analyze and get reasonable results of wire ropes mechanical properties.
