Abstract

Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a symptom and not a disease”. It is a common reason for gynecological consultation in pre- and postmenopausal women Confirming the etiology and planning appropriate intervention is important in the clinical management of AUB because accurate diagnosis may result in avoiding major gynecologic surgery in favor of minimally invasive hysteroscopic management.
It is generally accepted that the initial evaluation of women with AUB is performed with noninvasive 3D transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS). However, the accuracy of TVUS is limited in the diagnosis of focal endometrial lesions, and further investigation of the uterine cavity is warranted.
In the present study, forty adult females in the reproductive age period (20 –40) complaining of abnormal uterine bleeding had been selected from the outpatient clinic of El Shatby Maternity University Hospital were subjected to 3D TVUS, D&C and hysteroscopy. Comparison of the findings in the 3D TVUS, D&C and hysteroscopy was done to calculate the diagnostic accuracy of this different diagnostic tools.
Hysteroscopy had a higher specificity and sensitivity than 3D TVUS and endometrial curettage; which led to a more superior diagnostic accuracy than 3D TVUS and D&C in the diagnosis of causes of abnormal uterine bleeding in pre-menopausal women.
