Abstract

Background: Patients with ectodermal dysplasia are characterized by partial or complete anodontia and their prosthodontic rehabilitation might be problematic. Purpose: The present non-randomized cross-over clinical trial aims to compare patient satisfaction, retention and abutment periodontal condition in soft liner and acrylic resin telescopic retained maxillary complete overdentures for patients with ectodermal dysplasia. Methodology: Seven, partially edentulous patients with ectodermal dysplasia, were recruited from the Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. All patients received acrylic resin maxillary complete overdentures (group N, stage 1), which were later replaced by soft liner telescopic retained ones (group S, stage 2). Patient satisfaction, retention and periodontal condition were evaluated 1 week and 3 months following the completion of each stage. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the medians of groups N and S regarding patient satisfaction [2(0-5)] and tooth mobility [0.5(.1-2.8)], favouring group S with a p=.041 and .035, respectively. On the other hand, after 3 months retention was higher in group N [2(1-3)] at P=.025 and probing depth was statistically higher in group S at P<0.001. Conclusion: Considering patient satisfaction, soft liner telescopic retained maxillary complete overdenture is recommended for children with partial anodontia and ectodermal dysplasia with precautions regarding oral hygiene measures and 3 months recall visits.
