Abstract

This study was performed to clarify the relative ameliorative effects of flaxseeds, sesame seeds and sunflowers seeds diets on diabetic as well as on hypercholesterolemic rats. Also the effect of mentioned seeds cakes was in the scope of this investigation. Seeds and cakes used at 5 % level of the diet. A total number of 75 Sprague Dawley male rats were used in 15 groups, 5 rats each.
The first group control (-) fed on plain basal diet. Diabetes mellitus induced in rats by alloxan infection, and hypercholesterolemia induced by feeding on diet with addition of 1.5% cholesterol for 3 weeks. All the period of the experiment, the inflicted rats consumed 1.5% cholesterol with animal fat. Diabetic and hypercholesterolemic rats fed on basal diet in the control (+) group. Seeds & cakes were purchased from a big shop (Haraz, Cairo). Inflicted rats fed on flaxseeds, flaxseed cake, sesame seeds, sesame cake diets and sunflower seeds, sunflower cake 5% diet for 28 days. The biological & biochemical parameters as well as histopathological changes were assessed and results could be summarized as follows:
 Diabetic rats:
- Diabetes mellitus lowered BWG, FI, FER of rats which was reversed when feeding on flaxseeds, flaxseeds cake, sesame seeds, sesame seeds cake and sunflower & sunflower seeds cake, especially in case of flaxseeds cake.
- Due to diabetes mellitus the internal organs weights increased, but the weights decreased when feeding on studied seeds and cake diets, in particular that of the flaxseeds cake.
- Serum glucose raised considering inflicted rats, which was reduced by experimental diet, especially that of the flaxseeds cake.
- By diabetes mellitus serum TC, TG, VLDL, LDL and AI increased, while HDL decreased. Never the less feeding on experimental seeds and cakes diet this was reversed. Best treatment was that of flaxseeds cake, followed by sesame cake, then case the sunflower cake.
- Liver function deteriorated by diabetes mellitus, while improved by feeding on experimental seeds & seeds cake

diet as indicated by the increase then decrease of ALP activity respectively.
- Renal function impaired appreciably by diabetes mellitus. Never the less, uric acid, creatinine and urea levels reduced in serum specially by feeding on flaxseeds diet.
- Histopathological changes followed that of biological and biochemical parameters, indicating that restoration of the original structure of liver & kidney was marked, in particular when flaxseeds cake diet was used for diabetic rats.
 Hypercholesterolemic rats:
- Hypercholesterolemia raised the BWG of rats while lowered both FI and FER. Flaxseeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seed and their cakes diets reversed such change, especially when feeding on flaxseeds cake.
- Due to Hypercholesterolemia the weight of internal organs (liver, heart, kidney, spleen, lung) of rats increased, while were decreased when feeding with mentioned seeds and cakes diet, in particular that of the flaxseeds cake.
