Abstract The process of meaning adaptation has recently represented an intellectual challenge for scholars and theorists working in the field of linguistics and pragmatics. In addition to the fact that it is a highly complicated mental process, meaning adaptation also succumbs to miscellaneous variables, such as the linguistic context, the cultural milieu that generated to the utterance, and the intellectual background of those who receive this utterance. Relevance Theory, as a milestone and an important branch in linguistics and pragmatics, investigates the mechanisms of how meaning is generated and how this meaning generates other layers of meanings and interpretations. This study makes use of Relevance Theory by using the technique of the Echoic account, which considers any ironic utterance an “echo” in order to explore how irony generates layers of meanings in Galal Amer’s book entitled The Brevity of Speech(2012). Basically inspired by Grice’s work in the field of pragmatics, Relevance Theory is utilized in this research because it concretizes the methods through which the meaning conveyed within the different utterances is communicated to the readers via the social context and the not-said rather than through the actual literal input. The researcher also makes use of the Pretense Theory which states that the speaker pretends to perform a speech act to show the implied meaning behind this act.In this study the researcher found that the Relevance theory is more suitable for detecting irony in Galal Amer’s quotes by considering them an Echo than using the pretense theory because it needs more illustration and it is suitable for conversations than this kind of writing in this study. Moreover, Galal Amer’s writings can be considered a kind of writings which is suitable for detecting verbal irony. |
